Pure flint grit perfectly sized and washed is the best type of grit for chickens.
Modern feed contains enough calcium for even the most prolific layers and the additional calcium from mixed grit can be detrimental to their health and can cause poor shells. This is because excess calcium upsets the important calcium:phosphorus:vitamin D balance which is the holy grail of eggshell formation.
